Susan Scovill Memorial Scholarship

Each year, based on available funding, The Haven Yacht Club offers the Susan Scovill Memorial Scholarship. Graduates of Kent County High School who will be full-time college students or who will be attending a post-secondary marine trade school are encouraged to apply. The deadline for application is announced in January and usually falls in mid-April. The amount of the scholarship is currently $600.00.

The scholarship committee considers academic performance, leadership, and school and community involvement in the selection process. Preference is given to applicants who work at least part-time in the marina industry in Kent County. If you have questions about the Susan Scovill Memorial Scholarship or The Haven Yacht Club, please feel free to contact P/C William Thygeson, Ph.D., at 215-503-8189.

Commodore's Greeting

Commodore - Tom Futch

Welcome to The Haven Yacht Club website. This site is “brand spanking” new for 2008 thanks to one of our club members, Mr. Dick Greenwood. We hope this site will be informative and useful to current and prospective THYC members. If you have suggestions as to how we can improve our web site, please pass along your comments to one of the officers or governors.

The purpose of our club is to promote and encourage interest in all the various activities relating to boating in general and includes both sailing and power classes of vessels; to educate members and children in the safe and proper use of any vessel in cruising, navigation, docking, and on board safety to name a few; and to cultivate social and friendly contacts and associations among our members. Although we are headquartered on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake at the Haven Harbour Marina in Rock Hall, Maryland, we have members from a variety of marinas and areas around the Bay, including a few whom are currently “landlocked”.

We are a less formal club and without any facility expense, have minimal annual dues. Currently we have about 90 members, not counting family members and pets. Much focus is spent on having fun together. In fact, the planning and attending of numerous annual events and cruises typically results in our being a very social organization! We have a very energetic slate of Officers, Governors, and Committee Chairs this year to help guide our Club to another successful and fun boating season. As you realize, our Club runs strictly on a “volunteer” basis and there are ample opportunities to take an active operating role, be a committee member, or to just lend a hand. My philosophy on asking for volunteers is to ask several folks for help with small, defined tasks. This way no one person is overly burdened. So, if our committee chairs, officers, or governors should ask for your assistance this year, please say YES. And, should you see someone performing a club task, ask if you can help.

One of the unique aspects of THYC is our establishment and support of the Susan Scovill Memorial Scholarship. Named in memory of a Past Commodore, the Scholarship fund is sustained through contribution, fund raising, and the profits from the sale of THYC clothing. We currently have 4 deserving students from the local area under an annual contribution to their higher education based on maintaining acceptable academic achievement. Each year we consider qualified applicants as our chance to give back to the community that we all enjoy so much.

We have fun-filled schedule of events and cruises this year including our Opening Day Flag Raising, annual Picnic Cruise, incomparable Crab Feast with day-long activities, the Fall Dinner, Winter Commodore’s Ball, and numerous cruises to both interesting anchorages and marinas. Throughout the season you will be able to see updates on cruises and events right here on our web site (not to mention photos as the evidence of the fun that is being had by all!). Also included on the site are valuable links for a variety of commonly used resources and local merchants.

So thanks again for visiting our web site. To our current members, we value your friendship and continued participation in support of our club. If you are not a member yet, please contact one of us for more information and see the Membership Application link at the bottom of our home page. I appreciate the opportunity to lead our Club this year and look forward to seeing you at the docks and on the water!
